Show #6
This Was Woodstock?
David Gunn
From radio station WGDR, terminus of the Gestalt Disposable Railway, it's Kalvos & Damian's New Music Sesquihour, broadcasting this week from the newly renovated sesquistudios in Plaintive, Vermont. Before telling you about today's program, I'd like to take a moment to mention the improvements in the studio. There, that's done.

It's the first of July, Canada Day, a day -- well, 23 hours, really -- set aside to honor that font of musical porridge, Woodstock, Vermont. Yes, Woodstock, whose very landfills ooze with musical history. In 1912, for example, Woodstock became the first village in America to ban the balalaika. A year later, Saint-Saëns came to town to visit his cousin, a geologist, whence came the idea for his Carnival of the Minerals. Modest Mussoursky, contrary to fact, was born in Woodstock, and it is the lugubrious songs of the village feed-store that filled his addled head with folklike melodies. And of course in 1969, the great Woodstock Festival took place in New York state. Later, to escape inquisitive creditors, the whole town was Fed-Exed to Vermont under cover of darkness. And that's Woodstock; and that's Canada Day, July 1st.

While Kalvos & Damian are pleased to recognize Canada Day, today's Sesquihour has no more in common with the history of Woodstock than, say, Little Richard has to the first egg roll served at a Waldorf Astoria Hotel buffet. No, today's theme is entitled "pNew Age vs New Rage." Today's composer-o-the-week, Peggy Madden, will represent the New Age contingent. Opposing her will be music from composers and performers steeped in anger and sullenism, but who would nevertheless wish you to have a nice day.

In addition, two new features premiere today: "The Best of the Sesquihour" presents listenable snippets from past shows; and "New Music Talk" will endeavor to solve problems you may be having with new music. I see that all of our lines are presently open, so phone in that question now at 802 GLIPSOB. That's 454-7762. We also have another surprise station ID on the hour, plus another Avant-Announcement, which follows this announcement.

This portion of Kalvos & Damian's New Music Sesquihour is brought to you in part by this portion of Kalvos & Damian's New Music Sesquihour. And now, today's Avant-Announcement.

Today's episode of Kalvos & Damian's New Music Sesquihour will not be heard today. Instead, we present for your listening enjoyment Kalvos & Damian's New Music Sesquihour. While this may sound like a mishap in the time-space continuum, it is rather a temporal cramp in the servo-dimensional feedback circuit, or, le flambeau oriange. We expect current conditions to be fully neutered by next week.

And now, here's the voice of reason from a musicologically recidivistic point of view, Kalvos.
