Henning Berg, born 1954, was jazz trombonist in the internationally well-known WDR Big Band since 1982. Here he worked with leading European and American composers, arrangers, and soloists like Bob Brookmeyer, Peter Erskine, Mel Lewis, Dave Liebmann, Kenny Wheeler, and Joe Zawinul in many concerts and record/CD productions. In 1996 he left the WDR to have more time for his own projects.
Besides the work with the WDR Big Band, Henning Berg was Bob Brookmeyer's partner in two duo projects, and wrote several electronic film scores for West German TV. Moreover he played in many jazz ensembles, from a duo with the drummer Andreas Genschel to larger bands around the pianist/composer Alexander von Schlippenbach.
Since 1991, he has studied composition with Bob Brookmeyer and John McGuire.
The idea of transferring his experience in duo playing to a situation where man and machine improvise together was his motivation to learn programming and to start developing the interactive computer program "Tango". In 1992 it was published by a big music software company, and Henning Berg and other musicians used it in concerts in Germany and abroad.
Since 1994, Henning Berg and the English pianist John Taylor have cooperated regularly in the group "Tango & Company". A trio CD with "Tango" as a third improvising player has been released by Jazzhaus Musik, Cologne, in spring 1997.
